This recipe pairs so well with Low-Carb Garlic Truffle Aioli, Garlic Avocado Aioli, and Chipotle Mayo. It is pretty much exactly the same as my baked Healthy Sweet Potato Fries recipe. I cracked a code and found the perfect way to make sweet potato fries that are crispy AND crunchy, yet still HEALTHY using corn starch.

Are sweet potato fries healthy? Absolutely! Especially when they aren’t cooked in harmful oils like vegetable oil. They are also more nutrient dense than regular French fries.

How to Cut Sweet Potatoes into Fries

I like to use a fry cutter because it’s quick and painless. This also helps get the fries at an even size, which is great for ensuring all of the fries cook evenly in the air fryer.

If using a fry cutter, you will need to soften the sweet potatoes in the microwave for a few minutes first.

If you don’t use a fry cutter, rinse and peel the potatoes. Place the sweet potatoes on a cutting board, and slice off 1/4 of an inch from each side. Roll the potato onto the flattest side. Slice the potatoes lengthwise into 1/2 inch planks. Cut each plank into fries 1/2 of an inch thick.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes peeled and cut lengthwise, mine weighed about a couple of pounds total
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

Fry Cutter Instructions

  • I used a fry cutter to slice the sweet potatoes. This helped provide more evenly shaped fries which helps with even cook time.

  • If you use a fry cutter, you will need to soften the potatoes first. They are too hard to cut when completely raw. The instructions on the cutter I used, said to microwave for 1 minute. I had to microwave them for 3-4 minutes to get them soft enough.

Air Fryer

  • Place the sliced sweet potatoes in a large bowl with cold water.Allow the sweet potatoes to soak in the water for an hour.

  • Remove the sweet potatoes from water and dry completely. Sprinkle the cornstarch throughout.

  • Sprinkle in the paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

  • Place the fries in the air fryer basket and spray with olive oil. Do not overcrowd the basket. Cook in batches if necessary. If you see white spots of cornstarch on the fries, spray the area with olive oil.

  • Adjust the temperature to 380 degrees and cook for 23-25 minutes. Set a timer for 10 minutes and stop and shake the basket at the 10-minute mark (once). Use your judgment. If you like crispy fries, cook them longer and be sure to check on them.

  • Cool before serving.

Notes

Every air fryer will cook at different speeds. Monitor your fries often.

If you have trouble getting the fries to crisp, spray more oil. Your basket may also be too crowded.

If you want crispy fries, do not slice the fries too thick. Thick potatoes will not crisp.

As someone deeply familiar with culinary techniques, healthful cooking methods, and various kitchen appliances, let me delve into the concepts and methods outlined in the article about Easy Air Fryer Crispy Crunchy Sweet Potato Fries.

Key Concepts and Information:

  1. Air Fryer Basics: Air fryers are kitchen appliances that circulate hot air around food, giving it a crispy texture similar to frying but using significantly less oil. This method is lauded for producing healthier versions of traditionally deep-fried foods.

  2. Sweet Potato Fries vs. Regular Fries: Sweet potato fries are often considered healthier than regular fries because they are more nutrient-dense, providing more vitamins and minerals. Additionally, when prepared correctly, they can be lower in fat, especially when not cooked in harmful oils.

  3. Cornstarch: Cornstarch serves as a coating for the sweet potato fries, helping to achieve a crispy exterior. The cornstarch absorbs moisture from the sweet potatoes, ensuring that the fries turn out crunchy.

  4. Seasonings: Seasonings like paprika and garlic powder add flavor to the sweet potato fries. Paprika provides a smoky, sweet flavor, while garlic powder imparts a savory note. Salt and pepper enhance overall taste.

  5. Cooking Technique:

    • Preparation: Soaking the sweet potatoes in cold water removes excess starch, ensuring crispiness. Drying them thoroughly post-soak prevents sogginess.
    • Temperature and Time: Cooking sweet potato fries at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes helps achieve the desired crispiness. However, it's essential to shake the basket mid-way to ensure even cooking.
    • Oil: Using a spray of olive oil on the fries is crucial to achieving a crispy texture. Without oil, the fries might not get the desired crispness.
  6. Cutting Techniques:

    • Using a fry cutter helps create uniform-sized fries, ensuring even cooking. If employing this method, it's essential to soften the sweet potatoes in the microwave briefly.
    • If you don't have a fry cutter, manual slicing involves first creating planks and then cutting them into fries. Ensuring uniform thickness is essential for even cooking.
  7. Frozen Fries: Cooking frozen sweet potato fries in an air fryer follows a similar procedure, with the key being to check frequently and adjust cooking time based on desired crispness.

  8. Additional Recipes: The article also provides links and references to other air fryer recipes like Air Fryer French Fries, Air Fryer Potato Wedges, and more, showcasing the versatility of the appliance.

  9. Nutritional Information: The recipe provides a breakdown of nutritional content, emphasizing its low-calorie nature. However, always ensure accuracy by calculating based on the specific ingredients and quantities used.

In summary, this article offers a comprehensive guide to making crispy and crunchy sweet potato fries using an air fryer, highlighting techniques, seasonings, and essential steps to ensure success. Leveraging these methods can help home cooks create healthier versions of a beloved snack or side dish.
